From: Dan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator The "Vital" discography ................................................................................ I. Introduction II. Van der Graaf Generator releases (LP's, CD's) III. Peter Hammill releases (LP's, CD's) IV. VdGG miscellany (including Long Hello) V. Hammill miscellany VI. Unofficial releases ................................................................................ I. Introduction --------------- This discography represents three years of cumulative discoveries, acquisitions, and general listening pleasure concerning one of the best kept secrets in modern music. Many of the listings below constitute what I, personally, own and some may be anomalies (in other words, the same album might also be on another label and thus be more readily available through that.) This is not by any means meant as a "be-all & end-all." There will be plenty of room for additions and corrections, and I encourage knowledgeable readers to help out, especially in the miscellaneous and unofficial zones. The entries will consist of: available medium (LP, CD); release date - for both Lp and CD whenever possible; track list; label and distributor, and musicians. These will all be documented whenever possible; if I come up short -- I apologize. Again, anyone who has supplementary information, please contribute! Thanks to Mike Spindloe and the Pawn Hearts society for much information! Enjoy the trip! II. Van der Graaf Generator releases -------------------------------------- The Aerosol Grey Machine ------------------------ Released in 1968. This is regrettably the only vdgg release NOT on CD yet, and the album has become VERY hard to find. The only musicians that I am sure of are Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith, but I think Nic Potter is present also. Track list: Afterwards/ Orthenthian Street (I & II)/ Running Back / Into a Game /Aerosol Grey Machine / Black Smoke Yen / Aquarian / Necromancer / Octopus. There are some extremely rare pressings where "Necromancer" is replaced with a song called "Squid." The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other ----------------------------------------- Releasaed in 1969. I have seen this on CD. Once. Line-up: Hugh Banton, Nic Potter, Peter Hammill, Guy Evans, David Jackson. Track list: Darkness (11/11) / Refugees / White Hammer / Whatever Would Robert Have Said / Out of my Book / After the Flood The copy I have was distributed by Philips (Germany). All subsequent vdgg titles including this one, unless otherwise noted, are on the Charisma label. H to He Who Am the Only One --------------------------- Released in 1970, and on Cd recently (sometime in the past few years) by Virgin and distributed by Caroline (as are all future vdgg cd's unless otherwise noted) The lineup is the same as above except that Potter only plays on 3 tracks, and Robert Fripp plays on "Emperor". Track list: Killer / House With No Door / The Emperor in his War-Room (I. The Emperor, II. The Room) / Lost (I. The Dance in Sand and Sea, II. The Dance in the Frost) / Pioneers Over c. Lyrics are included in both lp and cd format. CASCD 1027 Pawn Hearts ----------- Released in 1971 - Available on Cd. Lineup: Nic Potter has faded totally from the band at this point, and Fripp plays throughout the entire album. Tracklist: Lemmings (including Cog) / Man-Erg / A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers: a) Eyewitness b) Pictures/Lighthouse c) Eyewitness d) S.H.M. e) Presence of the Night f) Kosmos Tours g) (Custard's) Last Stand h) The Clot Thickens i) Land's End (Sineline) j) We go now Note: Early pressings of this LP contain a track called "Theme One", which at some point was omitted. CASCD 1051 Godbluff -------- Released in 1975 - available on Cd. This album signifies the reunion of vdgg, with a harder, tighter sound. Lineup: (for Still Life and World Record as well) Peter Hammill, Guy Evans, Hugh Banton, David Jackson. Tracklist: The Undercover Man / Scorched Earth / Arrow / The Sleepwalkers Older versions of the LP contain the lyrics. The cd does not. CASCD 1109 Still Life ---------- Released in 1976 - available on CD. Tracklist: Pilgrims / Still Life / La Rossa / My Room (waiting for wonderland) Childlike Faith in Childhood's End Visually speaking, this is one of the better CD reissues. Lyrics are included. CASCD 1116 World Record ------------ Released in 1976 - I think this is out on Cd, but I'm not positive. The lp that I own was put out by Mercury, though it is on the Charisma label. Tracklist: When She Comes / A Place to Survive / Masks / Meurglyss III, the Songwriters Guild / Wondering The album includes the lyrics. The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome ---------------------------------- Released in 1977 - available on CD. This is the first (and only studio) release under the name "Van der Graaf". Along with the shortening of the name came shorter songs and a more accessible sound, as well as a change in the lineup - there is Hammill, Evans, and Jackson (I think I hear his sax on the last track.) Nic Potter has returned (Hugh left,) and violinist Graham Smith joins. Early pressings of the lp contain a gatefold sleeve w/lyrics & pictures. The cd contains neither. The sides are titled, respectively, The Quiet Zone, and The Pleasure Dome, although the songs aren't meant to be a part of some whole (as in a), b) etc.) Tracklist: Lizard Play / The Habit of the Broken Heart / The Siren Song / Last Frame / The Wave / Cat's Eye|Yellow Fever (Running) / The Sphinx in the Face / Chemical World / The Sphinx Returns Supposedly, there are some versions of this record which contain Ship of Fools (not the live version.) CASCD 1131 Vital ----- Van der Graaf live. Released in 1978 by PVC. (Suki Films) The cd is still put out by Virgin. The cd is missing two original tracks that were omitted in order to ensure a single cd package - the original album is a 2lp set. Tracklist: (for Cd) Ship of Fools / Still Life / Last Frame / Mirror Images / Medley - (1) Plague of Lighthouse Keepers (2) The Sleepwalkers / Pioneers Over 'c' / Door / Urban pt.1 - Killer - Urban pt.2 The original album also contains these two tracks: Sci-Finance / Nadir's Big Chance. BE WARNED!! There are some cd's out that list all ten tracks! The players on this album are: Peter Hammill, Guy Evans, Nic Potter, Graham Smith, Charles Dickie (cello & keyboards) and David Jackson. CVLCD101 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 45's (obviously, these are all extremely rare...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have very fragile and limited information about these. Firebrand / People You Were Going To ------------------------------------ This was released before "The Aerosol Grey Machine". A reworked version of the B-side later appears on Peter's "Nadir's Big Chance" album. Afterwards / Necromancer ------------------------ I know nothing of this one except that it was released in the U.S. Theme One / W ------------- The only other place to find "W" that I know of is on REPEAT PERFORMANCE. Refugees / Boat of Millions of Years ------------------------------------ ... and the same with "Boat" Cat's Eye|Yellow Fever (running) / Ship of Fools ------------------------------------------------- I can say nothing about this except that it exists. I own none of these, and have only heard about them through the PAWN HEARTS organization. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- This concludes the Van der Graaf Generator legacy. The following are comp- ilations, outtakes, etc. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Repeat Performance ------------------ I believe that this was released between the Pawn Hearts - Godbluff gap. It is on the Charisma label. I don't think it is available on Cd. Tracklist: Afterwards / Refugees ( the 45 version) / Boat of Millions of Years/ W / White Hammer / Necromancer / The Emperor in his War-Room / MAN-ERG The cassette also contains "The clot thickens" from A PLAGUE OF LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS. There is a thing called simply "68-71", which may be the same as this. The lp that I have is made in Italy. Time Vaults ----------- I have no idea when this was released, or if it is available on Cd, though this is doubtful. The liner notes are confusing and contradictory. The "songs" vary from "VdGG ones which never reached the full recording stage; others are band versions of 'solo' songs; and the set is completed with a number of other types of playing, from the free to the random." (-Hammill.) All these tracks were apparently recorded during the PAWN HEARTS - GODBLUFF gap. Musicians include Peter Hammill, Guy Evans, David Jackson, and Hugh Banton. Tracklist: The Liquidator / Rift Valley / Tarzan / Coil Night / Time Vaults / Drift (I hope it won't) / Roncevaux / It All Went Red / Faint and Forsaken / Black Room This is on the Demi-Monde label (DM003), dist. by Charly Records. Now and Then - Jackson, Banton, Evans ------------------------------------- This is a real oddball - I don't quite know what to make of it! It's available on cd from Thunderbolt (CDTB042), but there is no date on it anywhere - nothing but the track list. Which is: Saigon Roulette / The Liquidator / Gentlemen Prefer Blues / The Main Slide / Tropic of Conversation / Spooks / Tarzan / The Epilogue. "The Liquidator", and "Tarzan" are no different from TIME VAULTS, just cleaner. First Generation / Second Generation ------------------------------------ These are two seperate Cd's that document the VdGG history. "First" chronicles the band from 68-71, and the second from 75 up to the end. Included in the booklets is a fairly interesting bio of the band, each covering the same period of time as the music. I don't know who puts out these cd's, or when they were originally released - but I don't think it is Virgin, because I have never seen these outside of an import zone. I don't know what the tracks are, but it's safe to say that they consist of a fairly equal cross-section of the albums. III. Peter Hammill releases ---------------------------- All Hammill cd's, unless otherwise noted, have been reissued by Virgin over the past few years, and distributed by Caroline. Peter obviously plays on all the albums, so I kept his name out of the musician-lists. Fools Mate ---------- The very first solo album by Peter Hammill, released in 1971 on the Charisma label (between H TO HE and PAWN HEARTS.) The musicians on this album include: Guy Evans, Hugh Banton, Nic Potter, Martin Pottinger, Rod Clements, Ray Jackson, David Jackson, Bob Fripp, Paul Whitehead Tracklist: Imperial Zeppelin / Candle / Happy / Solitude / Vision / Re- awakening / Sunshine / Child / Viking / Summer Song (in the autumn) / The Birds/ I Once Wrote Some Poems. Lyrics not included in either format. CASCD 1037 Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night ------------------------------------ Released in 1973. The first of the string of solo albums following the initial break-up of VdGG. Musicians include: (I believe...) Guy Evans, David Jackson, Hugh Banton Tracklist: German Overalls / Slender Threads / Rock and Role / In the End / Easy to Slip Away / What's it Worth? / Dropping the Torch / Black Room (incl. The Tower) Lyrics are included in the cd booklet. CASCD 1067 The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage ------------------------------------- Released in 1974. Musicians include: Guy Evans, David Jackson, Hugh Banton, Randy California (from SPIRIT) Tracklist: Modern / Wilhelmina / The Lie (Bernini's Saint Theresa) / Forsaken Gardens / Red Shift / Rubicon / A Louse is Not a Home The lyrics, liner notes, and insane artwork that contributed to the total exper- ience of the album have all been omitted from the cd re-issue. For shame! CASCD 1083 In Camera --------- Released in 1974. Apparently the early pressings of the lp have lyrics, notes, etc. Once again, the cd reissue does not. I think that the only players on this outing besides PH himself are Guy Evans and Hugh Banton or Nic Potter(??) Tracklist: Ferret and Featherbird / (No More) the Sub-Mariner / Tapeworm / Again / Faint-heart and the Sermon / The Comet, the Course, the Tail / Gog.. Magog (in Bromine Chambers) CASCD 1089 Nadir's Big Chance ------------------ Released in 1975. This is a very interesting album. Tongue-in-cheek (?) discourse by PH on the back cover of the album (not the cd, of course!!!) about being taken over by his pre-punk anarchic alter-ego, Rikki Nadir, of which this album is the result. I wonder if this isn't to some extent a parody of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust persona... Another example of ph's versatility, as well as an admitted inspira- tion to at least one of the kingpins of the punk movement. Musicians: Guy Evans, David Jackson, Hugh Banton Tracklist: Nadir's Big Chance / The Institute of Mental Health (Burning) / Open Your Eyes / Nobody's Business / Been Alone So Long / Pompeii / Shingle Song / Airport / People You Were Going to / Birthday Special / Two or Three Spectres CASCD 1099 Over ---- Released in 1977. Musicians include: Nic Potter, Guy Evans, Graham Smith, and Michael Brand conducts the orchestra on "This Side of the Looking Glass." Tracklist: Crying Wolf / Autumn / Time Heals / Alice (Letting Go) / This Side of the Looking Glass / Betrayed / (On Tuesdays She Used To Do) Yoga / Lost and Found The CD is slated for release (Caroline) on 4-26-91. It is apparently available now as a Japanese import. CAS(CD) 1125 The Future Now -------------- Released in 1978. Musicians include: David Jackson, Graham Smith Tracklist: Pushing Thirty / The Second Hand / Trappings / The Mousetrap (Caught in) / Energy Vampires / If I Could / The Future Now / Still in the Dark / Media- evil / A Motor-Bike in Afrika / The Cut / Palinurus (Castaway) CASCD1137 Vision ------ Released in 1978 in the US as a thematic sampler of the pre-Godbluff solo albums, on the Import records label (IMP 1016), distributed by JEM. Lyrics are included. I don't think that this has been released on CD yet, or that it ever will be. No re-mixing or anything of the sort has been applied to these songs. Tracklist: Imperial Zeppelin / (No More) the Sub-Mariner / Modern / Dropping the Torch / Vision / Sunshine / Nadir's Big Chance / The Institute of Mental Health (Burning) / The Comet, the Course, the Tail / In the End. PH7 --- Released in 1979. The album includes lyrics and stuff (I used to have the sheet, but I lost it.) Of course the cd is no help. Musicians: (that I am sure of) David Jackson, Graham Smith. (more?) Tracklist: My Favourite / Careering (don't ask me) / Porton Down / Mirror Images / Handicap and Equality / Not for Keith / The Old School Tie / Time for a Change / Imperial Walls / Mr. X (gets tense) / Faculty X Some original pressings contain a track called "The Polaroid." CASCD 1146 (this is Peter's last Charisma release.) A Black Box ----------- Released in 1980. Musicians include the three Davids: Lord, Jackson, Ferguson Lyrics are included in the lp but not the cd. Tracklist: Golden Promises / Losing Faith in Words / The Jargon King / Fog- walking / The Spirit / In Slow Time / The Wipe / Flight: a) Flying Blind b) The White Cane Fandango c) Control d) Cockpit e) Silkworm Wings f) Nothing is Nothing e) A Black Box CDOVED 140 Sitting Targets --------------- Released in 1981 on Mercury. (6302 130) Musicians: David Lord, Guy Evans, Phil Harrison, David Jackson, Morris Pert. Tracklist: Breakthrough / My Experience / Ophelia / Glue / Empress' Clothes / Hesitation / Sitting Targets / Stranger Still / Sign / What I Did / Central Hotel I haven't seen the cd, so I don't know what the number for that would be. Enter K ------- Released in 1982, on the Naive label (Navl1). This is not on cd yet, and there is no date for it in the forseeable future (same as Patience.) The musicians on this album are hereafter known as the K group: Peter Hammill (K), John Ellis (Fury), Guy Evans (Brain), Nic Potter (Mozart). Lyrics are available in the lp. Tracklist: Paradox Drive / The Unconscious Life / Accidents / The Great Experiment / Don't Tell Me / She Wraps It Up / Happy Hour Patience -------- Released in 1983, also on the Naive label (NAVL3). Musicians: K group, David Jackson, David Lord, Stuart Gordon. Tracklist: Labour of Love / Film Noir / Just Good Friends / Jeunesse D'Oree / Traintime / Now More Than Ever / Comfortable? / Patient The Love Songs -------------- Released in 1984, a compilation of various "love songs" done over the years, every track changed somewhat except for "Been Alone So Long." The musicians vary from track to track: some tracks are Kgroup performances with the vocals dubbed in, some are original music tracks, with new vocals dubbed in, etc. "Just Good Friends" is a complete reworking. Tracklist: Just Good Friends / My Favorite / Ophelia / Been Alone So Long / Don't Tell Me / If I Could / The Birds / Again / Vision / This Side of the Looking Glass. The Margin ---------- Peter Hammill & the K Group Live. Released in 1985. This is a 2lp set. The European cd release has cut two tracks (The Second Hand, The Sphinx in the Face) in order to facilitate a single cd package. The more recent Japanese version has everything but "The Second Hand." Tracklist: The Future Now / Porton Down / Stranger Still / Sign / The Jargon King / The Second Hand / Empress' Clothes / The Sphinx in the Face / Labour of Love / Sitting Targets / Patient / Flight (entire). Skin ---- Released in 1985. The first Enigma album, also available on cd from Enigma. (ST - 73206) Musicians: Guy Evans, David Jackson, David Coulter, Stuart Gordon, Hugh Banton, David Luckhurst, Paul Ridout. The tracks: Skin / After the Show / Painting By Numbers / Shell / All Said and Done / You Hit Me Where I Live / A Perfect Date / Four Pails / Now Lover Some early pressings of the lp are botched -- they are missing the "You Hit Me" track, and the last part of "Now Lover" appear on the first cut of side 2, separate from the rest of the song. And Close as This ----------------- Releasaed in 1986 on Virgin in the UK and on Restless in the US. CD's are available domestically through both avenues. Peter Hammill plays everything, which is to say, keyboards. Tracklist: Too Many of my Yesterdays / Faith / Empire of Delight / Silver / Beside the One You Love / Other Old Cliches / Confidence / Sleep Now Lyrics are available by sending a SASE to a given address. Spur of the Moment ------------------ Peter Hammill & Guy Evans Released in 1988 by Date Records, a division of Line Music. (DACD 9.00564) This is an improvisational, instrumental album with tons of hi-tech equipment at the disposal of these two Graafians. Paul Ridout also helps out, indirectly. Tracklist: Sweating it Out / Surprise - Little Did He Know / Without a Glitch / Anatol's Proposal / You Think Not? / Multiman / Deprogramming Archie / Always So Polite / An Imagined Brother / Bounced / Roger and Out In a Foriegn Town ----------------- Released in 1988 on Restless (7 72337-2). At this point I think that the term musicians might be a misnomer. Let's try technical assistants: Paul Ridout, David Lord, Neil Perry. Tracklist: Hemlock / Invisible Ink / Sci-Finance (Revisited) / This Book / Time to Burn / Auto / Vote Brand X / Sun City Night Life / The Play's the Thing / Under Cover Names / (Smile / Time to Burn (instrumental) - cd only) Out of Water ------------ Released in 1990 on Enigma Records. (CD only) CDP 7 73540 2 UK: CDENV 1003 Musicians: John Ellis, David Jackson, Nic Potter, Stuart Gordon Tracklist: Evidently Goldfish / Not the Man / No Moon in the Water / Our Oyster Something About Ysabel's Dance / Green Fingers / On the Surface / A Way Out Room Temperature Live --------------------- Released in 1990 on Enigma - a 2cd package. It documents the 1990 N.American tour. Musicians: PH - guitar, keyboards / Nic Potter - bass / Stuart Gordon - violin Tracklist: Disc 1: The Wave / Just Good Friends / Vision / Time to Burn / Four Pails / The Comet, the Course, the Tail / Ophelia / Happy Hour / If I Could / Something About Ysabel's Dance / Patient Disc 2: Cat's Eye .. Yellow Fever (Running) / Skin / Hemlock / Our Oyster / The Unconscious Life / After the Show / A Way Out / The Future Now / Traintime / Modern This is everything up to the present. Shortly ("any day now...") Peter's long- awaited operatic interpretation of THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER will be available and he is currently working on a new "regular" album. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Hammill 45's (as before, I know very little about these, except that they do exist ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Shift --------- Italian pressing, picture sleeve Crying Wolf / This Side of the Looking Glass -------------------------------------------- UK promo If I Could / The Future Now --------------------------- Canadian 45 The Polaroid / The Old School Tie --------------------------------- UK 45 My Experience ------------- UK 45, picture sleeve Paradox Drive ------------- UK 45, picture sleeve Film Noir / Seven Wonders ------------------------- UK 45 Just Good Friends ----------------- UK 45, Picture sleeve Painting By Numbers ------------------- Spain 45 picture sleeve -also- UK 12" EP, picture sleeve IV. VdGG Miscellany (including Long Hello) -------------------------------------------- The following is a sketchy listing of vdgg offshoots (Long Hello, solo stuff by members OTHER than Peter(!), etc.) The Long Hello -------------- According to Guy Evans, this was a concept first imagined during the Pawn Hearts days and realized in 1973. The idea was to play and record music free from "record-company angst." The project was partially financed by friends and fans. There were a small number of albums released initially in '73, and than a wider distribution in '76, by Butt Records (NOTT 002). Aside from Nic Potter, Guy Evans, Hugh Banton, and David Jackson, the album features Piero Messina, and Ced Curtis. This lp was generally known as Vol.1 when Vol.2 came out. Vol.2 was released in 1981 and was the result of a collaboration between Guy Evans and Nic Potter. They were responsible for writing all the songs, both individually and collectively, and Giles Perring and David Jackson play minor roles in the project. (Nott 004). Vol.3 I know very little about (it's the only one I don't have) but I do know that it is David Jackson's project. I've no idea who else plays on it with him. (NOTT 005) Vol.4 is, for me, the most interesting and involved LH project to date. It features Guy Evans, along with Life of Riley and David Jackson. Gong fans might recognize the names Harry Williamson and Dave Sawyer (honorary members of Life of Riley.) This album was recorded in the midst of the Mother Gong - Robot Woman albums, which Guy drums on. This is available on Shanghai Records (HAI 101). It was released in 1983. As far as I know there haven't been any more Long Hello's, or plans for any, & I don't think any of them are available on compact disc. Vol.1 Tracklist: The Theme from (Plunge) / The O Flat Session / Morris to Cape Roth / Brain Seizure / Fairhazel Gardens / Looking at You / I've Lost My Cat Vol.2 Tracklist: Surfing with Isabelle / Elsham Road / Dolphins / Carnival / Broken Chain / Hidden Drive / Indian / Zen / Agua Blanca / Welcombe Mouth Vol.3 Tracklist: unavailable Vol.4 Tracklist: Holsworthy Market Place / Trick or Treat / Der Traum von Julius / The Rock of Riley / The Caretaker's Wife / The Wonderful Brothers / Martha's Express Wishes / Hamburg Station / Solo Kabine / The Finger Points / Haben Sie Waffen Oder Funk Dabei? / Slow Slither Loop / My feet are freezing but my knees are warm. -------- Nic Potter has at least a few albums out: SELF-CONTAINED and MOUNTAIN MUSIC, as well as a new one, titled BLUE ZONE, which has various guest musicians from this circle, including Peter Hammill and Stuart Gordon. All three of these albums can be ordered through PAWN HEARTS. I can't supply anymore information here. -------- David Jackson has a new CASSETTE entitled SAVAGES which is a movie soundtrack. This also can be ordered through PAWN HEARTS. --------- Graham Smith has released several albums from Iceland. MED TOFRABOGA and KALINKA are the names of two of them, and there is at least one more that I don't know the title of. --------- V. Peter Hammill Miscellany ---------------------------- Peter does the vocals for three tracks on Robert Fripp's EXPOSURE: "Chicago", "Disengage", and "I may not have enough of me but I've had enough of you." He is responsible for the track on RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT (the recording of the WOMAD festival spearheaded by Peter Gabriel) called "The Ritual Dance of the Mask." He has translated the lyrics to German pop singer Herbert Gronemeyer's WHAT'S ALL THIS?, and wrote and arranged a song (on which he also sings and plays keyboards) on Italian singer Alice's album, IL SOLE NELLA POGGIA. The song is called "Now and Forever." He is at least partly behind the LOOPS AND REELS tape, put out by Soundmaker and Computer Music magazine. VI. Unofficial Releases ------------------------- This list is limited to vinyl (and one cd.) Tapes are just too extensive and widespread to even begin to document. As I am intimately familiar with only a few of these, I will only be able to supply a few tracklists.
